Shield Karate Culver City Belt Testing

Shield Karate Culver City Belt Testing Event will be held Sunday, February 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Diamonds are produced by adding pressure to carbon until it transforms into the hardest substance known to man. This multi-faceted crystal is admired worldwide for its beauty and strength. The purpose of the Shield Karate Belt Test Event is to give the our students enough pressure to expose the power and beauty within them.

At this formal event our students will showcase martial values like self-discipline, patience, honesty, kindness and respect. They will also present their current skill level and knowledge of self defense principles.

Please arrive early, with uniforms on and all equipment ready to go. We will start with a 30 min warm up and introductions. The test will be structured similar to a regular class so the kids are familiar with what to expect. The atmosphere will be formal. Their fighting spirit will be challenged. This will not be an easy test.

We will have special guests sitting at the testing panel to help Sensei keep an objective eye on the students skill level.

At each belt level there are certain skill and performance standards they must pass. Even among their peers at the same belt rank, they are never compared to each other.
Please keep in mind, every student is assessed on their individual progress. Progress is the biggest consideration for belt promotion.

Belt ranks represent a combination of progress, time spent training, attitude in class, vigorous effort, commitment to learning, skill, and potential. As you know, Shield Karate’s curriculum is diverse. Each child will excel and have difficulty with different aspects of their training. We respect that we can’t all excel at everything, but we must be committed to work hard at learning the things we aren’t good at.

Does everyone pass their belt test? Technically, no.

Some children will experience the pain of failure at the test, but they will receive a belt and an unsigned certificate with a plan to improve and retest privately within the month. This is set up to keep the child’s dignity intact, and to teach them how to recover from failure. Depending on the child there may be tears, but we are here to teach them how to recover from failure and use it as a stepping stone to success. They will not be allowed to wear the belt in class until they pass their make up test and the certificate is signed.

The Belt Test is really a celebration of your children’s hard work during the year. It is a rite of passage to help them set goals while encouraging their commitment to excellence and personal growth. Please RSVP with the total number of friends and family that will be in attendance.

A New Era in Karate - Machida Karate and Karate Culture

This kind of research leads to deeper understanding of what is already in Karate. It has been hidden or lost for many reasons, but the guys at Karate Culture are diligently doing the work and sharing their discoveries.
Just as the Machidas have done, their Karate is clearly influenced by training in other arts.

My training at the Inosanto Academy has changed my Karate for the better. Limb destructions have long been a prominent aspect of Filipino Martial Arts, but the concept exists in all.
Karate's culture of respect, discipline, and service to others is what many Martial Arts schools lack nowadays.

This is why I choose to teach everything I know in a karate way.

Shield Karate blends arts while emphasizing the spirit and culture of Japanese Budo.

Machida Sensei

Its been too long since I've been in the presence of someone who lives Budo. After training with Sensei Chinzo and Sensei Lyoto, the patriarch of the Machida family honored us with a special lecture on the history of Machida Karate and the importance of Budo Culture.
I was reminded of why I began my study of Karate over twenty years go. After a long journey through many other Martial Arts (that I will continue to train in) I feel at home again. This is what I want to share with my students. Its not the fighting or the technique that makes Karate. Its how you train and how you live your life.
Budo is living skillfully and always ready for anything that comes your way.
