Karate Girl demonstrates how to hold an opponent down on the ground using Side Control and Cross Face from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
The Cross Face Technique is used to control the opponent's head. This keeps them from escaping while you develop a submission or prepare to break contact and get up.
At Shield we also grapple for fun, staying on the ground to practice our skills agains a resisting opponent.
We train with the mindset of self defense. Our main goal is to prevent someone from hurting us while we control them from the top position. At the advanced levels we learn to use submissions. Our goal in self defense on the ground is to control the opponent and escape to safety.
